Counting, is an intuition about how "many" objects are there in front. Consider this: There is a tree in front of a person, and beside this tree, there is an another, beside which, there is still an another. A question arises: How to describe this scene? If there is again a tree "joining in", how to describe it ?
Numbers at this time comes in. In order to exactly describe this scene, people thought of the terms: one tree, two trees, three trees, four trees, and five trees, and moreover, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, and twelve trees. From now on, if there are several objects together, one can easily and exactly tell others what he has seen.
How ever, if there are "too many" trees, in other words, the number of these trees "exceed" twelve, how to deal with what we have seen about these trees? At this time, more counting method and counting vocabulary has been introduced. Indeed, people found that they have to construct a systematic method instead of creating a new word for each "larger" number endlessly. After thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, and twenty are used, for further larger numbers, we use a "predicate".
Twenty one is the number right after twenty, while twenty two is right after twenty one. similarly, we can go on, say, twenty three, twenty four, twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven, twenty eight, twenty nine, and then, the number becomes thirty. Then, the regulation brings us to thirty one, thirty two, ...
Now, from twenty, thirty, we are going to convent those ty's. we use the words forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninty. From ninty one to ninty nine, the next number is called one hunderd.
One hundred is not small in object counting. It seems to be enough for use. Imagine that, a parking lot is full of cars, say, tens of cars. Only few of people will exactly count the cars, say, seventy seven cars, while the others would roughly tell us that, there are "many" "many" cars.
